CCT takes a moment to answer “What is Star Citizen?”…at least for him.
Someone asked me that question recently and it gave me pause, strange enough as that may sound. I talk about Star Citizen on a daily basis to a substantial amount of people, and yet I found myself lacking the right words to express what it really is. It can be a great many things to just as many people. So I guess I can start with what Star Citizen is, to me.
I spend a lot of time on the Star Citizen subreddit. I consume a ton of the really great content that people make, from gameplay clips to custom Arduino controllers. I try to answer questions as I see them, or direct people to places where they can find them. But above all else, the thing I look forward to seeing the most when I open up the subreddit is the stories. Ever since 2.0 came out, at least once a day you can find someone’s incredible tale of their first steps into the ‘Verse. The sense of awe as they step onto the landing platform, the wonder as they find a hidden corner of a space station, the adventures they have fending off pirates and finding new comrades. Those stories are Star Citizen.
And that’s what makes this game so special. Every game that’s out right now tries to be an “RPG” in some sense of the word. But has the term been watered down so much over the years that it’s simply a particular progression mechanic or a choice-based narrative experience? How many games out there really let you play a role? Let you be who you want to be in another world? The majority of games out there give you a beautiful painting, and what you take from it could be totally different. And that’s great! There’s great merit in getting something meaningful from a piece of art. But what Star Citizen does that truly makes it what it is, at least for me, is hand me the paint brush.
Star Citizen is going to be a lot of things for a lot of people. People who love FPS. People who love PvE. People who love exploration and mining and racing and so on and so on. But that’s the whole point. Star Citizen is what you make it. It’s something that a lot of people are afraid to make. It’s something a lot of people are afraid to play. It’s an answer to the people who dream of being among the stars. But the one thing above all else it is, for me, is a story. What’s yours?
We are drawn toward the familiar. It is safe, reliable. But it can shackle us to the ordinary, when in our souls we want to strike out to become something new. We started with a simple mantra, “Dare to Dream.” Dare to challenge the expectations of what’s come before. To embrace the unique, to put everything on the line. Only when we risk everything can we discover something truly special…and redefine what it means to travel the stars. To explore the farthest reaches. To race on the cutting edge. To protect what we love. Say goodbye to the familiar.
