Hello ‘Verse! Erris here!
It is my utmost pleasure to introduce today a new feature on The Relay:
KTDM, or Knowledge Trout Data Merchants, is a small, information-based Organization that sixfsincaps and I started as a roleplay justification for our insane spreadsheet shenanigans. Now that The Relay exists as a central source for all things Star Citizen, KTDM has partnered with The Relay to bring you the KTDM.shipWorks tool.
For several months now, sixfsincaps and I have been working on this interactive spreadsheet, which we designed to allow the customization and configuration of any possible ship loadout. Using the spreadsheet, you can change your weapons, shields, and missiles, with more to come, and you can immediately see the respective changes to the stats of your ship.
The spreadsheet uses data drawn directly from the game files, and includes all ships and items in those files, including some that are not included in AC yet.
Here is sixfsincaps’ Reddit post on it:
Back in December, I made a strangely popular little spreadsheet called the KTDM Scripts Compendium that listed many of the game’s ship components and their respective entity data, which I had extracted manually from the game’s script files. Today, Erris and I are incredibly excited to finally unveil KTDM.shipWorks, an online tool that allows you to instantly equip and compare weapons, missiles, and shields in the context of any ship that’s currently flyable in Arena Commander 1.0.3.
Unlike the Scripts Compendium, Erris and I designed shipWorks with the intention of upgrading and updating it regularly – it took loads of time to design a database query system that automatically creates Excel tables from the game data, but this means it takes little manual effort to update the spreadsheet’s data when new patches are released. Further time may be taken to implement new features (e.g. REC when AC 1.1 releases), but changes should overall be pretty quick! These updates will be made permanently available on the Relay page, so be sure to check in regularly – especially a day or two after Arena Commander patches.
The UI, being based in Microsoft Excel, is pretty rudimentary – all interactivity exists through dropdown menus (on cells outlined in orange) and the tab buttons at the bottom of the IFrame, which are used to change pages. Still, we were able to achieve every major feature we wanted, so our hope is that it isn’t too difficult for everyone to work with.
While we did put effort into making shipWorks interesting and fun to use, it can be hard to tell what features and information people really want out of something like this. If you have any suggestions at all on how shipWorks can be improved, we encourage you to leave a comment or send me a PM.
The KTDM.shipWorks page can be found on our home page, at the top in the navigation bar, under ‘Projects’, or by following this link:
On behalf of sixfsincaps, myself, and the whole The Relay crew, we hope you enjoy the tool.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please let us know in the comments here, or send sixfsincaps a PM over on Reddit.
